🌙 A Nighttime Encounter with Hydrangeas

Today, during an evening walk, I stumbled upon a blooming hydrangea in a quiet park.
Its vivid colors stopped me in my tracks, and I couldn’t resist taking a photo. The photo above shows the hydrangea. I just thought, “I want to decorate my house with hydrangeas”.

But did you know hydrangeas are notorious for wilting quickly once cut?
In this post, I’ll share four easy techniques to keep hydrangeas fresh at home.

💧 5 Methods to Keep Hydrangeas Fresh

① Alum Treatment – Prevent Bacterial Blockage

Rub a small amount of alum powder on the cut end of the stem.
It helps prevent bacteria from clogging the water channels, especially during hot and humid seasons.

② Hot Water Treatment – Open the Water Channels

Cut the stem diagonally and immerse the end in just-boiled water for 5–10 seconds, then transfer it immediately into cool water for a few hours.
This method removes air bubbles and opens up the xylem (water tubes).

③ Deep Water + Newspaper Wrap

If the flowers are wilting, wrap them in newspaper and soak them deeply in water for several hours.
This reduces moisture loss and helps the flower recover more effectively.

④ Charring

Cut the stem and briefly burn the end with a lighter or torch until it blackens.
Then, immediately place it in cool water.
This is especially effective for older or woody stems.

⑤ Remove Padding

Cut the stem at an angle, remove any cottony pith inside, and split the end vertically to increase the surface area for water absorption.

🏡 Bring Hydrangeas into Your Home

With just a bit of extra care, you can enjoy hydrangeas much longer at home.
Try these methods and add a touch of seasonal beauty to your living space.
