🌧 In Humid June, I Wanted to Bring a Sense of Coolness
June in Japan is deep in the rainy season—hot, sticky, and damp. It’s a time when even going outside can feel like a burden.
That’s when I often wonder: Can I bring a sense of coolness through visual means?
For this arrangement, I chose a vibrant turquoise vase, along with the elegant calla lily and the ephemeral summer camellia (shara-tsubaki), which blooms only during this season.

💧 When the Water Surface Takes Center Stage
In ikebana, we don’t only focus on flowers—the space, silence, and even invisible elements are just as crucial.
This time, my emphasis was on the presence of the water surface.
To evoke coolness, I wanted to make the clear water visible and central. I used a low, open vase that reveals the water, allowing the reflections of the stems and leaves to create both calmness and tension in the composition.
🌸 About the Summer Camellia (Shara-tsubaki)
The shara-tsubaki, or summer camellia, is a deciduous tree that blooms only briefly in early summer.
Each flower lasts for just one day—it opens in the morning and falls by evening. This fleeting nature aligns beautifully with the Japanese aesthetic of mujo (impermanence).
In Buddhism, it’s associated with the sal tree that is said to have bloomed when Buddha passed away, symbolizing tranquility and transience.
🧘 As a Doctor, I Want to Share the Healing Power of Flowers
As an emergency and general internal medicine physician, I witness moments of healing that go beyond medication.
A gentle smile. A deep breath. A shift in atmosphere. These subtle cues often arise in the presence of flowers.
Through ikebana, I hope to share this quiet healing power with everyone—even if just through a screen.
🧪 Calla Lily and Summer Camellia: A Doctor’s Perspective
Calla lilies symbolize purity and elegant beauty. Their upright, smooth form reminds me of the quiet dignity of a doctor’s white coat.
Meanwhile, the short-lived summer camellia resonates with the preciousness of time I feel in medical settings.
Each day is unique. That’s why these fleeting flowers hold so much meaning.
🌼 Why don’t you start a life with flowers?
You thought to yourself, “I need flowers because I’m busy.”
The first thing I tried was a flower subscription service👇. It’s affordable to start, easy to cancel, and fits right into your lifestyle.
A simple bouquet can bring peace to even the busiest days.
That’s what makes flower subscriptions so appealing.
