Introduction – A Mindful Floral Journey in Early Summer
In late June, hydrangeas reach full bloom across the Kanto region. As always, I—Ikebanadoctor—look forward to this season with great anticipation. This year, I visited Hondoji Temple in Matsudo, Chiba, and Kyu-Nakagawa Riverside Park in Tokyo’s Koto City.
Both spots offer not only stunning hydrangeas but also peaceful scenery with lotus flowers and riverside views.

Hondoji Temple – Where Hydrangeas and Lotuses Meet in Harmony
Access and Atmosphere
Hondoji Temple is about a 15-minute walk from JR Joban Line’s Kita-Kogane Station. The majestic temple gate and five-story pagoda are landmarks you can’t miss.
I visited around noon on June 22, and parking lots nearby were already full. Fortunately, I found a coin parking lot, but I highly recommend using public transportation.
History and Cultural Significance of Hondoji Temple
Hondoji Temple was founded in 1277 (Kenchiji 3rd year) during the Kamakura period by the esteemed Nichiren Buddhist monk, Nichiro Shonin.
It is said to have been established on the site of the former Hiraga clan residence and later transformed into a major training ground for Buddhist practice.
With over 700 years of history, Hondoji is not only celebrated as a “Hydrangea Temple” but also recognized as an important center of Nichiren Buddhism.
Within the temple grounds stand several historic structures, including the main hall, five-story pagoda, Niomon Gate, and bell tower—each echoing the spirit of its era.
The majestic pagoda, rebuilt in 1971, is especially beloved as a revived example of traditional temple architecture in modern times.
Cherry blossoms in spring, hydrangeas and lotus flowers in early summer, vivid autumn leaves, and snow-draped landscapes in winter—Hondoji changes with the seasons.
It combines the elegance of a floral temple with the weight of deep historical and cultural legacy, offering new insights and gentle inspiration with every visit.
Over 10,000 Hydrangeas in Full Bloom
Around 10,000 hydrangea plants bloom throughout the temple grounds. The variety of colors—blues, purples, and pinks—and types give each path its own charm.
Hydrangeas framed by the pagoda or temple gate are particularly photogenic. With every turn, the scenery changes, making you feel as though you’re walking through a floral labyrinth.
Lotus Flowers Are Best Seen in the Morning
When I visited at noon, many lotus flowers were still in bud form.
Because lotuses begin blooming with sunrise and close by afternoon, 7:00–9:00 a.m. is the ideal time for photography.
The sight of dewdrop-covered petals gently unfolding in the morning stillness was absolutely magical.
Enjoy Local Food and Souvenirs
Shops along the temple path offer snacks, souvenirs, and a few sit-down dining options. After enjoying the flowers, I had a delicious bowl of wild vegetable udon.
There were also hydrangea-themed sweets and Japanese towels—perfect keepsakes from the trip.

Kyu-Nakagawa Riverside Park – A Free Hydrangea Spot in Tokyo
Urban Serenity Along the Riverside
Located in Tokyo’s Koto City, Kyu-Nakagawa Riverside Park is a peaceful escape from the urban rush.
Descending from the central “Fureai Bridge,” you’ll discover a walkway lined with hydrangeas.
The sound of the river and the gentle breeze make you forget you’re in the middle of the city.
History of Kyu-Nakagawa Riverside Park and Its Role in Urban Ecology
The Kyu-Nakagawa River once served as a vital waterway for transportation linking the Edogawa and Arakawa Rivers. From the Edo period through the early Showa era, it played an important role in trade, agriculture, and daily life.
However, during Japan’s rapid urban development, the river’s water quality declined. In the 1980s, a large-scale environmental restoration project was launched, transforming the area into a harmonious riverside park where nature and city life coexist.
The area was officially redeveloped into Kyu-Nakagawa Riverside Park in the 1990s. Today, it features cherry blossom trees, open lawns, a canoe course, and biotopes, creating a community-centered recreational space.
The hydrangeas planted along the riverside are part of this urban greening effort, offering seasonal beauty and a peaceful escape throughout the year.
Today, this riverside space also serves as part of Tokyo’s disaster prevention infrastructure, while remaining a beloved destination for walking, jogging, and seasonal flower viewing.
The tranquil river and blooming flowers create a peaceful environment—a rare oasis that brings quiet healing to urban daily life.
Enjoy the Flowers for Free
Admission is free, and the park is open 24/7. The open, natural atmosphere is rare for Tokyo.
I visited after Hondoji by car, but since it’s only a short walk from the nearest station, public transport is the smarter option.
While the park is spacious, the main hydrangea area is relatively limited. Look for the landmark “Fureai Bridge”—from there, follow the path down to the riverside to find a charming “Hydrangea Walk.” White hydrangeas bloom gracefully along the promenade, with Tokyo Skytree rising in the distance as a stunning backdrop.
Caution: Heat-Damaged Hydrangeas
When I visited on June 22, temperatures exceeded 30°C, and some hydrangeas had wilted from the heat.
Still, those in shaded areas were healthy and photo-worthy.
I recommend going in the early morning or late afternoon to avoid the heat.
