Sky Poppies of Chichibu — 12 Million Blooms on a Mountain Ridge

📍 Chichibu Highland Ranch, Saitama 🌸 Best season: mid-May–early June 📷 NIKON Z f

At around 500 meters above sea level, the ridgeline of Chichibu suddenly opens, and a vast slope of red rises to meet you — the "Sky Poppies" (Tenku no Poppy), a field that appears for only a few weeks each early summer. Roughly 12 million Shirley poppies bloom across the hills of the Chichibu Highland Ranch in Saitama, straddling the villages of Higashichichibu and Minano. When the wind sweeps over the ridge, the petals sway all at once, as if a red sea were quietly breathing.

The field nearest to the sky

What makes this place special is less the flowers themselves than the distance between the flowers and the sky. Nothing tall interrupts the slope, so beyond the red of the poppies the mountains of Chichibu and the wide sky simply continue. On a clear day, red, green and blue blend into a gradient all the way to the horizon, and the composition is almost decided for you by the land itself. On a cloudy day, the soft light deepens the colour of the flowers into something quieter and more tender. Each kind of day has a face all its own.

The patience of waiting for light

In the emergency room, almost everything is a race against the second. What flower photography taught me, instead, was the richness of waiting. The poppies are at their most beautiful in the low light of early morning, and again in the late afternoon when the slanting sun grazes the slope. The petals are thin and let the light through, so shooting slightly into the sun makes each one glow like a small lantern. Take in the sky and the distant ridgelines with a wide lens and the scene earns its name; compress the distance with a telephoto and the red stretches on like an endless carpet. You wait for the wind to pause, hold your breath, and release the shutter. Moments that feel truly caught are rare in a single day — which is exactly why each one brings a quiet kind of contentment.

Planning your visit — season & dates

A few notes for those hoping to see it in person.

The poppies are usually at their peak from mid-May to early June. An event is held to coincide with the bloom; in 2026 it is scheduled from Thursday, May 21 to Sunday, June 7, 9:00–17:00 (last entry 16:30). Opening dates and entry conditions (such as a small conservation cooperation fee) can change from year to year, so please check the official site before you go. Weather also shifts the timing of the bloom. The days just before full bloom, when buds and open flowers mingle, offer their own soft palette and are well worth the trip.

Getting there & parking

The venue is the Chichibu Highland Ranch (Sai-no-Kuni Fureai Bokujō) in Sakamoto, Higashichichibu Village, Saitama. By car, simply set your navigation to "Tenku no Poppy" or "Sai-no-Kuni Fureai Bokujo," and staff will guide you as you approach. Free parking is provided, though the temporary lots sit on open grassland with a slope; on rainy days the ground turns slippery and the field may close, so do mind your footing and the forecast. By public transport, in some years a shuttle bus runs from in front of Minano Station on the Chichibu Railway during the event, reaching the venue in about 25 minutes. Service varies by year, so it is worth confirming in advance.

Tips for photographers

Early morning is the sweet spot — fewer people, softer light. Shooting into the light to catch the translucence of the petals makes the red sing. A wide lens that takes in the sky and mountains gives you the "sky" in Sky Poppies; a telephoto that compresses the slope turns the field into a carpet of red. The ridge is windy, so the trick is to wait for the brief stillness when the flowers stop swaying. When the midday sun grows harsh, a lightly overcast sky is its own gift for capturing gentle, saturated colour.

While you're in the area

The Chichibu–Nagatoro area is dotted with seasonal scenery. A short drive away you'll find the Nagatoro gorge, Mount Hodo, and Chichibu Shrine — more than half a day could ever hold. On your way back from the poppies, it's worth seeking out one more favourite view.
