Roppozawa Gorge in Autumn — Looking Down from a Bridge at 1,433 Metres
Nikko, in Tochigi. About halfway up the road that climbs into the Kirifuri highlands, a white arch steps across a deep ravine in a single stride. This is the Roppozawa Bridge — 1,433 metres above sea level, with 134 metres of air between its deck and the valley floor. Lean over the railing and look down, and there below you is autumn colour spread across the whole of the slopes. It was the hour just after the sun had gone, and there was no sound at all.
Night Rises from the Bottom of the Valley
Autumn colour seen from high ground fades differently than it does down in the villages. The sun sets, and the sky stays pale and luminous for a while longer. But at the bottom of the gorge the colour of night has already begun to pool, and the reds and golds packed along the slopes let go, little by little, of their midday burning and sink toward something deeper, closer to indigo. Ridge folds behind ridge into the distance until only the layered blues remain. The same trees, the same leaves — and a face nothing like the one they wear at noon. That, I think, is what moves us. What is left after the brilliance goes stays with you far longer, and this valley teaches me so every year.
Time Slows on the White Arch
The Roppozawa Bridge is about 320 metres long, its white arch — a bridge of the reverse Lohse type — drawing a great curve above the ravine. Standing on its walkway, you feel the distance beneath your feet somewhere behind the knees, and then there is only the sound of the wind. Time in the emergency room is time counted second by second: how many minutes left, how many seconds, while your hands keep working. On the far side of that there are hours like this one. Here nothing needs counting. You simply watch the light go. With each breath the colour settled lower, and before I knew it the gorge was indigo.

Planning your visit — season
Set this high, autumn arrives in the gorge far earlier than it does below.
Roppozawa sits at around fourteen hundred metres. Along with Oku-Nikko, it is one of the first places in Nikko to turn. Mid to late October is the usual guide, though how the colour comes on depends greatly on the year's temperatures. By the time the Irohazaka and Lake Chuzenji reach their own peak, the leaves at this altitude are often already on their way out — so decide which of the two you are going to see, and then choose your date. Do note that the Kirifuri Highland Road closes for a period in winter. Please check the latest on the foliage and on the road through the Nikko city tourism site, Tochigi's travel information sites and similar official sources before you set out. Dusk in the highlands turns cold quickly, so bring one more layer than you think you need.
Getting there
From JR Nikko Station or Tobu Nikko Station, drive up the Kirifuri Highland Road. The Roppozawa Bridge lies roughly midway between the Kirifuri highland park and the Ozasa Ranch; you round a bend and the white arch appears without warning. There is free parking space at the near end of the bridge, so you can leave the car and walk out along the footway. Autumn in Nikko is famous for the queues on the Irohazaka, but this road sees comparatively few visitors, and you can drive straight into the colour without waiting. The bridge is high and the wind runs hard across it — take care that hats and light gear are not carried off.
Tips for photographers
This frame was made at the end of October, a little after half past four in the afternoon. The sun had already dropped behind the ridgeline, leaving perhaps fifteen minutes of pale twilight in the sky alone. The focal length was 24mm — wide enough to look down over the railing and hold everything from the near slope to the ridges stacked away behind it, bringing both the height and the depth into the frame. Aperture f/8, ISO 100, shutter 1/4 second. The light drains fast at this hour, so a quarter of a second is not something to hand-hold; it helps to have a way of holding the camera firmly still. Exposure tends to be pulled up by the darkening valley floor, which lifts the whole picture. Hold it back a little, enough to keep gradation in the sky, and the leaves record exactly as they sink toward indigo. The colour changes completely within a few minutes, so it pays to settle on your position before the sun goes down.
While you're in the area
Carry on up over the bridge and you reach the Ozasa Ranch; go back down and you come to the Kirifuri highland park, where the stairway climbs to a viewing platform looking out across the whole Kanto plain. From the bridge itself, conditions permitting, you can pick out the Kuriyama dam and the townscape of Imaichi, and on a clear day with the air well washed, sometimes as far as Mount Tsukuba. A short detour brings you to the Kirifuri Falls; head west and you have the Irohazaka and Oku-Nikko. Here the difference in altitude becomes a difference in timing, so you can come back and see the same autumn more than once.
